Hey, thanks for the video! I migrated from the Nexus S to the RAZR yesterday, and rooted and installed SafeStrap all in about 30 minutes thanks to your videos! If it isn’t any trouble, could you please link the ROM you installed? I don’t want to risk my phone trying out other ROMs without have a base to start off on…
Actually I don’t recommend the ROM I installed just yet that’s why I didn’t post.
Are you testing any ROMs for razr ics? Dont want to root unless theres a cool rom to use thats reliable. My company pays for tethering so thats not an issue for me.
yes testing this week, will have an update soon, I still haven’t found one I like better over stock just yet.
Still no cool ROMs for this guy? Really want to turn it into a beast!
I just followed your instructions/videos to root my Verizon DROID RAZR (success!), install Safestrap (success!), and backup the stock ROM (success!). However, after backing up the stock ROM and trying to reboot, the phone went to the Safestrap boot screen and blacked out after I pressed the “search” button. I used your method for fastboot, got back to Safestrap screen and let the system boot on its own after ten seconds…same black screen. I just finished restoring the stock ROM (which I never replaced). Same result. What can I do?
I had the same problem, so I turned off the phone using the Power+Volume Down for 10 seconds thing. Then when I turned on my phone, I pressed menu at the screen to take me into SafeStrap. Then I disabled Safe Boot, and it recovered my system and booted up just fine. I hope this helps!
I just tried that myself as well, and it worked. Thanks for the info, though!
Do you happen to know what the difference in the two modes really is?
Sorry, just got the phone, I really don’t know,, you probably know more than I do
Safestrap disabled is for the stock rom recovery/backup. When safestrap is enabled it is for trying new roms. You do this in safemode so if you make a mistake you wont brick your phone you just go back to safemode disabled and recover you stock rom.
Worked for me too! First time doing this so definitely needed that help.
How can I add new modules to my original rom? I am trying to add: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754888
Thanks!
The process is a bit complicated I don’t recommend installing it unless you know what you are doing.
So this is a great guide, but a little misleading. I too followed the instructions, enabled safe mode, backed up, and rebooted, but I pressed search to reboot, and got a black screen. After a little research this is what I found
There are 2 separate systems in safestrap. 1st (the unsafe mode) is the mode its in when you first install the app, in my case was stock, so this becomes my “unsafe” ROM. Then when you enable safe mode, you enter the second mode, where you are free to flash any new ROM. Contrary to what this video says, I would highly recommend backup up your old ROM in the NONSAFE mode (so you would backup first, then enter safe mode). The reason you get a black screen is because there is no ROM currently installed in the Safe mode. If you go back into unsafe mode and reboot, you will find you will boot into your old ROM.
Thats exactly correct sorry for confusion will update.
stock ICS rom. rooted.
I installed safestrap step for step as outlined in the video
then I used safestrap to create a backup as outlined in the video. after the back up was done I clicked reboot.
after that my phone is jacked up. the moto dual core screen appeared, followed by the safestrap menu….then nothing. the screen stays black and nothing works. the phone does not boot
PLEASE HELP! the steps in this video seem to have broken my razr….
nevermind,
the comment above mine fixed my issue
So how was the this ROM that you installed on this video… Cowa, or how ever you spell it.
I did not like it why I didn’t post on my site!
hey my safe strap wont turn safesystem on. it says unable to restore \data then i have to do a restore to be able to reboot. help?
You mean safestrap off???
Yea. Like i wanted to put the new eclipse rom. But when i try to toggle safe system. It says it cant recover the/data folder and it will remain disabled
sorry didnt mean yea. but like i said it wont turn safesystem on. always gives me the same error as i posted before
try to see if you can locate the files under safestrap folder and delete them then try enabling safe mode.
I followed the instructions step by step to backup my stock rom, but every time it gets to the /osh, I get an error. It does not do the md5 checksum either. How do I fix this to get a good backup?
do a backup before enabling safemode.
Sorry for getting back so late, but I think I found out why I was getting the error. Your battery must be above a certain percentage to avoid this error. I tried backing up again about a week ago, but this time with a full charge. The full backup was a success! Thanks for the great job you are doing!
So I didn’t particularly care for the ROM I installed so these are the steps that I performed.
1)Went to safe recovery mode.
2) Cleared data
3) Went to factory restore
4) Tried installing my backed up ROM that I put on my external sd card
5) Told it has been successfully installed
6)Select reboot now
Get a black screen.
Any ideas?
most everything I have said is in the comments above.
If you are going to use the stock ROM. You will need to disable Safestrap. Safestrap being enabled is for when you are using a custom rom so you don’t jack ur phone up.
I have an issue now where I went back to using the eclipse ROM but it says my SD card is not mounted and now TB will not work. I can see on my laptop that I have everything but it is not showing on my phone.
Hey Max,
Getting the black screens Tyler and AP were talking about above. Can’t seem to get a custom ROM installed (was trying to install Eclipse)… and tips?
Are you using Safestrap 2.0? And also running ICS official?
I installed Safestrap, backed up the rom, reboot, now when I press the menu or search key all I get is a black screen. Help please.
disable safemode, that will restore your system.
I just did this process. Backed up but instead of installing a rom right away I just hit reboot system because I haven’t picked a rom out yet but my phone never turned back on and nothing I do will get it to reboot. Its like tha battery is dead. It had a full charge andi put it back on the charge when this happened to see if that would do anything but its just dead. any ideas?
Try disabling safe mode that will restore ur system.
i have a question. i have the latest system update on my razor, will safestrap 2.0 work? and is there a video on how to install it on my phone. im only seeing videos of earlier systems and i dont want to screw mine up if there is a different wat to do it.
or is there a better backup for the latest system, im seeing a lot of comments about black screens and i definitely dont want that.. help would be greatly appreciated
Yes safestrap 2.0 works for all ICS.
Something worth mentioning here is that you will not be able to boot your system while safe system is enabled. At least I couldn’t. I had to disable before powering back up to transfer a .zip file
As a lot of others mentioned, I wanted to go to my stock rom after I installed this but I get a black screen.
However, the solution mentioned is to disable safe mode. But, I ALSO get a black screen when pressing menu at the safestrap screen.
Any thoughts? I can’t use my device at all right now… all I can do is get to the AP Fastboot screen by holding power/volume down and there the only option is to reboot by pressing power. This lets me get back to the safestrap screen, but both search and menu buttons give me a black screen.
Nevermind, I just wasn’t waiting long enough. The safestrap screen came up after a few minutes.
I am running SafeStrap 1.07 and want to update to 2.0 and install a new ROM. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to update to 2.0? It can’t be as easy as just downloading 2.0 and installing it over 1.07 can it? I feel like I should remove 1.07 then install 2.0?
10 points for you.
If you are on Gingerbread you need to update to ICS first.
I’ve already updated to ICS. I am currently rooted. Safestrap 1.07 is still there from when I installed it on Gingerbread. My plan, unless otherwise directed, is to uninstall recovery from the Safestrap App, then uninstall the Safestrap 1.07 app, then install 2.0 and ROM it. Good plan?
yup.
I downloaded Safestrap and got it in my phone and what not and its not letting me load the phone at all it has a black screen and stays like that for 5 minutes.
Any suggestions?
Did you enable safe mode? Disable safe mode and it will restore your system.
My work makes me encrypt my phone… is there a way to backup and restore to a new warranty replacement phone?
Hello,
can you tell me please send the link,
where did you get the beats audio ago. I would also like to make the … but I’ve been looking arm and a leg.
A big thank you in advance!
Ugh I just restored my system because I thought I wiped my rom when I did factory reset and didnt have a new rom waiting on SD. All I had to do was take off of safe mode???? So do I have to backup all over again?
Does this root ROM work for Razr-M or just the Razr?
This did not work at all, my phone is now frozen after it rebooted and i cant do anything! Verizon reccommends getting a new phone.
this ran perfectly & I was able to su into my XT912 via adb (after “adb root” ).
Thank you!!
I have the brand new razor XT 1080 with a 4.4. For software version can it be rooted.
