How to Root Droid Razr Android 2.3.5!

Want to root your Droid Razr?

For those of you who want to take full control over your new Droid Razr to get cool stuff like free 4G LTE wifi tethering, backup your apps, install new ROMs, and more, there’s an easy way to root your Droid Razr.

Update: Please see new root method for 2.3.6!

*Note – This guide is for Windows only for now, for Mac and Linux see How to Root Droid Razr on Mac or Linux.

Step 1. Go to Settings->Applications->Development and make sure USB Debugging is checked on.

Step 2. Connect your micro-USB cable to your Droid Razr and computer then make sure USB Mode is set to “Charge Only”.

Step 3. Make sure you have Droid Razr Windows drivers installed.  Download driver here and run the EXE program to install.

(You can verify you have Droid Razr drivers installed by going to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Device Manager and seeing Android USB Device.

Step 4. Download DroidRazrRoot.zip and unzip/uncompress, you will get a file folder called DroidRazrRoot.

Download DroidRazrRoot.zip

Step 5. Run the file runme.bat in the folder.  In a few minutes, your Droid Razr should be rooted.  You can verify your Droid Razr has been rooted if you have SuperUser app and run a rooted app like Titanium Backup app (available for free on the Market) to double-check.

Congratulations!  You’ve rooted your Droid Razr!

  1. mediathief says:

so i ran the root. worked. im rooted. problem is NOW my wifi wont stay connected. so im a little un nerved. i have rooted a fascinate, and 2 thunderbolts previous. so im pretty familiar. any suggestions would be great.

  2. mediathief says:

and even after unroot, my wifi is still effed up. wtf? i cant even use it. and your unroot does not remove or uninstall bionic bootstrap. this method is garbage. you should test something before you advertise it. thanks for the try though.

  3. hino says:

do you have a site to root HTC, if have can you show me please

  4. David says:

Thx, worked like a charm less than 5 minutes tb installed and freezing apps as we speak

  5. CASEY KOSTER says:

Is this method installing a recovery or simply just rooting the phone???

  6. Steven says:

Worked perfectly, thank you so much :D I can’t wait to see some less cluttered roms, using this phone is a bit overwhelming because of all the crap they have on here

  7. Jeremy says:

where the hell is the “DroidRazrRoot.zip” file at so i can download it and unzip it?

  8. Benjamin says:

I followed all the instructions and as soon as I pressed any button to begin it was instantly done and said , All done, run recovery from app draw press any key to continue . Any ideas why it didnt root?

  9. Dandroid says:

make sure you extract the files from the zip to your desktop first. then click on the runme.bat

    • Benjamin says:

I downloaded the motorola driver and ran it and the root zip and I extracted it to the desktop , the abd driver is showing up i selected usb debugging, charge only . did everything else in the video and I’m still getting the same message.

  10. Tradermule says:

I made list and checked it twice and these instructions were nice and never naughty. I’d always wanted to root my original droid but kept making excuses (e.g., I have to wash my hair… the moon is too full… I’m too damn lazy… etc)

With that “Mobile Hotspot” icon winking at me, I couldn’t resist trying on my Droid Razr. These instructions were total success. I can’t imagine being happier with a particular result unless I could get Hitler’s dad to wear a rubber that night.

  11. Scott Berken says:

What if i can’t see my Android in the device manger after installing the drivers. How do i fix that, Are there some setting in services that I have turn off the won’t allow the computer so see it?

  12. Rick says:

well just rooted my first phone. Also installed safe strap & backed up stock ROM everything is work like a charm so far. Thanks much. By the way do you have sites for the Droid X & HTC incredible 2?

  13. Mark says:

I have rooted my Verizon Razr 4G phone and followed all the steps as it was listed here. Right after I finished the process, my phone worked perfectly. Very next day I tried to connect my iPad to it and it stopped working. I have re-rooted my phone, but that did not work. Can someone tell me if they had a same issue as me with their Razr phone and what what can be done to make it functional…

    Thanks, MM

  16. skierfranzy says:

having trouble…started runme.bat but after hitting enter nothing happens, it says your bionic root is done. i dont have bionic i have a freaking razr

  17. The Grim RAZR says:

OK. I have an older version of Windows XP and I cannot find that Hardware and Sounds because it does not exist in my Control Panel. Any ideas?

  18. The Grim RAZR says:

I was able to do all. But I have yet to root phone for two (2) reasons: 1: I read some of the comments and I am afraid of messing up my RAZR I gladly paid almost $370 for with accessories. 2: Will this give me FREE Mobile Hotspot Tethering?

  19. The Grim RAZR says:

    Well. I solved that problem.

  20. Patrick says:

Cant get my Moto Razr XT910 rooted. i tried Windows 7 and mac osx lion.

getting permission denied. are you root

I tried all possible ways to root. i even cant get it into download mode while trying other alternatives.

    Please HELP !

  21. nick says:

ive been having some trouble when i try and root it it says all the apps that im supposed to get failed but it still reboots from the rooting system and i dont get superuser im not quite sure what to do any help?

    • Joel says:

Same problem. I have tried multiple attempts with my RAZR and the runme file runs but has a ton of “Unable to access…” and “failed to…” code come up. The code then says success, rebooting, and upon reboot, nothing has changed. I have done everything from removing launcher apps and other apps I have put on my phone all the way to a complete factory reset followed by a root attempt. Nothing works. Someone help, please.

  22. Jay Jennings says:

Android system update and now superuser is denying permission to everything… titanium, setcpu, root explorer…

Any suggestions? I have tried several things like reinstalling su, reinstalling safestrap, etc….

  23. Alan says:

I just got my Droid Razr this week and would like to root it. It came with Android 2.3.6, not 2.3.5. Has anyone tried this tool with 2.3.6, or knows how to root 2.3.6? Thank you.

  24. Holden says:

thanks for the info on how to root my razr. But , i was wondering if once you root can you still install the update when they come out?

  25. Hek says:

Looks like the 2.3.6 update prevents rooting dang it!

  26. Bryan Karlan says:

Yes, I just updated to 2.3.6 and I cannot run root also.

  27. becks says:

So i rooted my razr and my phone updated and messed my root up. How do i fix it?

    • aaron says:

I have the same issue as Becks here. I have tried to re-root it with no luck. i have a backup, but i can’t get superuser to work in order to load that back up, lol

  28. Jaminjim says:

I have not rooted the droid razr but have done many other tupes and to backup from a image you ahve to power off and hold the power and voilume up button to boot to restore mode. Don’t know if that will help you but it’s worth a try

  29. BARRY says:

Rooted my razr I SUbut is not granting su access.

  30. charlie says:

does anyone know if this root method works for razr maxx?? i think it will but was wondering if anyone has a maxx and can confirm..
    thanks

  33. Tony says:

Is there anyway to root a 2.3.6! ?

    • justin says:

I also haven’t found anything to root 2.3.6 . I tried all i can find and nothing works. I’m still waiting to hear if anyone has created one yet.

  34. mdcowby says:

Will any of these steps work with the Razr Maxx

    Rooting Plus installing a ROM…..

  35. Crash says:

I loaded this today and now my Razr is completely dead. It didn’t root and now the phone won’t turn on at all. DEAD. Thanks loads

  36. Crash says:

Premature deadness. Phone would not come on at all for two hours. Left it overnight on the charger and thank god it’s resurrected. No so dead razr. Just weirdness.

  37. Shashi says:

I am looking root my new Droid Razr Maxx which has Andriod 2.3.6. Can someone please help me out with a reliable link for rooting 2.3.6.

  38. Daniel Odulo says:

This is total garbage and a complete waste of time. I too have the new Max with 2.3.6, wasted hours trying to get it rooted. It states that it rooted successfully, but, paying more attention to the progress I fund the same error messages as quoted above. Obviously no one here is responding to the bug reports. I wish there was a way to get this deadbeat site down – would have saved me hours!

  39. Cesar says:

How do you know your phone is rooted cause i tried opening safestrap but it just says that safestrap closed unexpectly.

  40. Cesar says:

I open runme and go to comm and prompt and push enter.

I just rooted for the second time. When I try to run SQLite Editor it tells me that it’s been blocked by Superuser permission. I’ve set up Superuser to automatically allow all requests, has anyone run into this problem? Also when I select the prompt option it just hangs on the “searching for databases” but after 15 minuets I gave up hope.
