For those of you who want to unroot/update your Droid Razr to official ICS Android 4.0.4, here’s how to do it using Droid Razr Utility.

It’s highly recommended you unroot/update your Droid Razr to official ICS before trying to install the newer ICS ROMs.

This will work for all stock ROMs or custom ROMs.  For custom ROMs you might have to do a factory reset after unrooting, so just be careful about that.

*IMPORTANT – Before running this unroot method, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 100% Battery life as that will allow you to easily try again if something goes wrong!!!

For those of you on ICS 4.0.4, you can use this method to unroot to official ICS Android 4.0.4.

UPDATE: It seems like a lot of people are having problems with the latest DroidRazrUtility, please don’t follow this method instead unless you already have ICS, please do this instead:

If you currently have 6.12.173 software version, unroot using this guide, then do OTA (Over the Air Update) to ICS.

If you currently have 6.12.181 software version, download DroidRazrUtility 1.6 then do OTA (Over the Air Update) to ICS.

Download DroidRazrUtility for ICS ONLY!!! (This file is around 1GB so make sure you are on WiFi before downloading!!!)

Also, if you don’t have drivers installed, here’s Windows drivers for Droid Razr.

  2. Tre says:

Whenever I double click DroidRAZRUtility.bat and “Press any key to continue”, the window closes and nothing happens. I haven’t gotten so far into the process that I could’ve done something wrong. What could this be?

  3. mayhem says:

ICS sucks my ass…i want it gone until they can fix this shitty update…help me

  4. I wonder how this plays with encrypted filesystems. I’ve used Gingerbread to encrypt all data on the device. I will post results after moving to ICS. This should prove interesting…

  5. TFMLives says:

I did this on my rooted Razr Maxx and now my phone will not go past the Dual core screen. It just turns off. I did the Recovery and wiped all data to factory settings and it is still doing the same thing. I plugged my phone back into my computer and it is installing MotoCast but the phone itself will not boot up useing the methods suggested from the video. Any help or information on what to do to get my phone back on would be great. Thanks!

    • I’m having this same issue…

    • Alex says:

Same here… Stuck in black screen after dual-core.
Used Droid Razr Maxx rooted stock version.
      Please help!

    • I’ve done the full process a total of four times. I’m out of battery now. Not so happy… :(

      • TFMLives says:

I’ve tried going back to GB and it didn’t work either, I’m trying out downloading ICS 4 itself and installing from my external card from the andriod with his stomach open screen. (I don’t know what the technical terms are LoL) I also called Verizon and had them ship me a replacement already. I’ll write back if this works.

        • Monte says:

I had the same issue as everyone mentioned above.. The only way I could get to ICS was to download DroidRAZRUtility 1.42 to wipe everything back to And 2.3.6 (6.12.173) once I had that back totally to stock I recharged the battery – Ran the DroidRAZRUtility 1.8 again to no avail.. Went back to DRU 1.42 – to get back to stock.. Set up only my WiFi and updated to 181 via Settings/Phone Info/System Update, after that update went back to SettingsPhone Info/System and Updated again over WiFi to get ICS… Charged back up and Rooted per the instructions on the site.. ICS ran like Shit at first, took forever to download and install apps.. Put SetCPU on – turned it up and after a few restarts everything was working fine.. Hope this helps.. When I was stuck with black screen I had to do the Vol+ and Vol- then Power– When you see the bar flask on the screen let go of power for a sec then push it again so I could get into the boot loader and then get to AP Fastboot.

          • Tre says:

SERIOUSLY!!! This is getting a bit frustrating. I’ve downloaded several different versions of DroidRazrUtility (.zip, .7z, 1.42, 1.8) and the same exact thing happens. When I “Press any key to continue” on the Batman screen, it forces close. The only one I currently have is 1.42. I’m using the cable it came with. Any suggestions?

          • Tre says:

            Downloading 1.6 now……..

  6. Alex says:

same thing… ran update several times. Black screen after dual-core. Tried wiping user data/factory reset – does not help. Have to get replacement phone… Sad…

  7. josh says:

Lets start off by saying you do great work i have a razr maxx an was running eclipse an it was awsome. So i wanted to do ics so i followed your instructions on unroot/update to ics. Everything went fine until i unpluged an turned my phone on. Now just the motorola emblum comes up an thats it. Any help would be greatful.

  8. mechee says:

same here. i’ve tried unrooting a few times…dont know what to do now :(

  9. TFMLives says:

I’ve tried everything I’ve found online til my phone is dead. Now building a factory cable. My worry is that my phone wasn’t unrooted during the process when I send it back for exchange and they see it is rooted and I get charged 300 dollars.

  10. Tre says:

I didn’t get a chance to do this. I’ve downloaded the files I need but been out all day. I really wanna do it but, I dunno if I should even try it. From the sound of things, it may need to be tweeked a bit.

  11. mechee says:

OK. i was able to unbrick by following the instructions on: http://theunlockr.com/2012/01/24/how-to-restore-the-motorola-droid-razr-using-fastboot-files using
    VRZ_XT912_6.5.1-167_DHD-14_M2-5_CFC_1FF_01.xml.zip
    and rsd lite
it worked great! lost internal data, but got OTA update of ICS
just gotta reroot but at least im not out $$$$

  12. Falkkon says:

I attempted this process and now my phone only gois to the Dual Core Motorola Screen and than nothing…..I tried the 1.42 than, but I cannot even get my phone to boot up into AP mode or anything…help me please!

  13. Angel says:

So im attempting to root this i have all the file but when i goto my device manager and try to look for “other devices” it doesnt show up but the ADB Interface does.. im confused and lost can u help?

  14. John says:

Max, I’m not in Verizon coverage (live in Alaska), so I’m not getting the ICS OTA. Can you please confirm that this is the no-kidding-official Verizon/Motorola ICS update that I would normally get OTA? I am currently running the stock 2.3.6 with the .181 update and the ADW desktop. Any help you can offer is appreciated. This is great info and awesome work. Thanks. – John

  15. Kareem says:

So I see that many people are having problems.

How does one get a replacement?

    • Follow instructions further up to get RSDLite to put a new ROM on your device. I wouldn’t give up too soon unless you willing to shell out cash for a new device. In which case, send me your bricked one, I could use a new phone :)

  16. Tre says:

I’m using System version .1810, Droid version 2.3.6. I think I previously downloaded the wrong utility (1.42 & 1.8). I think I need 1.6 to unroot and get back to stock. So its downloading now. Hopefully when its done, I can actually get the program to run (rather than force close after the Batman screen). Am I right, or am I wasting time and bandwidth downloading this 1GB file? Someone? Anyone? Please help!!!

  17. Tre says:

O yea, btw, it sucks that your youtube channel was taken away. I signed the petition. Hopefully u’ll be back up soon.

  18. Tre says:

This freaking blows. DroidRazrUtility 1.6 does the same exact thing. Force closes at the Batman window. I’ve tried DroidRazrUtility 1.42, 1.6 AND 1.8. I dunno. I’m stuck with a rooted Razr (nothing wrong with that…I love being rooted) with system version .181, Droid version 2.3.6 that I cannot get updates for. Has anyone figured this out yet? Why does DroidRazrUtility force close at the Batman window? Is there a fix to this? Am I doing something wrong?

    • Monte says:

Tre – I am at a loss on that one.. Never seen that come up – I am sure you have the latest drivers – that is the only thing I can think of as all of the DroidRazrUtilities have ADB and everything else you would need.. I uninstalled my drivers – and that was the only way I could duplicate the close at the Batman window.. I re installed the drivers and it worked fine.. Might just be a shot in the dark, hopefully someone else can chime in..

  19. sam says:

So I rooted my phone about 3 months ago just to used wifi tethering. I got the update to ICS but now none of the rooted applications work anymore. I tried updating superuser but it doesn’t work. root access keeps getting denied. What should I do? I don’t exactly need a rooted phone now but free wifi tethering is nice.

  20. Tyler says:

Does this root make it so you cannot charge when the phone is off? When my phone is off and I plug it in it starts up.

  21. Daniel says:

Just out of curiosity i didn’t hear it mentioned. Does this update you even if you don’t have a recovery file of your original rom. Cause i made a recovery of my original rom and tested it. it worked but after i went back to eclipse it erased my recovery file. So would i be able to unroot to ICS?

  22. Tre says:

Upon trying to unroot, why does it force close at the Batman window (after pressing any key to continue)? I’m running System version .181, Android version 2.3.6. I need to unroot to get the ICS update but I can’t. I’ve downloaded DroidRazrUtility 1.42, 1.6 AND 1.8 and all of them force closes at the same place. I’ve downloaded the most current drivers, uninstalled them and used the drivers that came with each DroidRazrUtility. Can ANYONE help me out on this one? I’ve tried several time a day for the past week and still get the same results. Is there another way? At this point, I’d even consider going back to factory settings just to get the update. Anyone?

  23. Tre says:

Does anyone have any thoughts (or hopefully a solution) on this?

    • Cassandra says:

I am having the same problem, Tre… I can’t figure it out and it doesn’t help that I am completely in over my head with this! I just want my phone unrooted and ICS on it.

      • Droid Razr Root says:

        Try this:
        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540648

But you have to find the correct fastboot files. It seems like the problem is caused by Motorola’s software which doesn’t let you unroot straight to ICS, you have to update one by one, so if you remember the last version of software version you have, you just need to find the correct fastboot/SBF files that. Then just do OTA update instead.

  24. Cassandra says:

    Seems like I have 6.12.181.xt912.verizon.en.us

    android version 2.3.6

  25. Cassandra says:

is that just the update in the phone? like, i check for updates and install?

  26. Cassandra says:

Sweet. I am gonna try. Again, I’m sorry for my lack of knowledge in this, but when this file finishes, I do what?

  27. Cassandra says:

Well, something failed… and now the battery is too low… Man, oh Man…

    • Droid Razr Root says:

Make sure you are not using a USB hub, also try another USB port. Did you start with 100% battery? At the worst you can make a moto cable.

  28. Cassandra says:

What’s a USB hub? and the battery was near 100%…
I had my husband make a cable because I’m always a little shaky and honestly pretty lost without my phone… and it broke….

  29. Cassandra says:

AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S) (Boot Failure)
    0A.6C
To return to normal mode – first press power key to power down

Device is LOCKED. Status Code: 0

    Battery Low
    Cannot Program
    Connect USB
    Data Cable

Invalid CG OTV (CG: webtop): Invalid SP Data
Invalid CG HAB (CC: webtop, status: 0X004E
    Invalid CG OTV (CG: webtop)

This is what I am stuck on. I have to figure out something…

If I called Verizon, would they replace my phone? Or would they be able to detect that it has been rooted?

    • Droid Razr Root says:

They probably won’t be able to unless you told them. Try connecting straight to a USB port on your computer. It should work.

  30. james says:

    Aloha,

I have a Razr UnMaxx, it has the pre ICS Root. Phone is not working properly after I have clicked on ICS 4.04 update by mistake. Can i still unroot with older method or do I need to use Bricked Phone method?

  31. Eddie says:

How do I go about removing the clockwork recovery that has the boot menu when I power up the phone?

Also, how do I remove the Superuser from the phone?

    thanks!

  32. Eddie says:

The OTA is actually the 6.12.211 update.

  33. Adam says:

Will I have problems with this unroot if I have deleted some factory apps?

  34. Alex says:

If i do a factory reset on my rooted phone with ics will that cause any issues like bricking? Would i have to reroot if i did a factory reset

The link to DroidRazrUtility 1.6 on this page takes me to a page where it says it’s not found. I have having a terrible time trying to find this utility to UNROOT my droid razr maxx, so I can get the new ICS upgrade from verizon. I found another link to this utility xxx_final.zip but I cannot seem to download it…. very slow and then after a couple of hours fails. I have pretty fast cable internet. I found another download for this utility that says “…. it’s just like Matt’s”.. but only 30m. It says it is a lite version that gets what it needs at runtime from the web, but I cannot get it to work. Please help. Where can I simply find this utility and download it.

How would I do this do you have a video or list of steps?

  41. Henry says:

Will this unroot method also work when I rooted my phone using the EternityProject EasyRootICS the one click root? Does it matter what root method you used? I was on ICS and I used the one-click root method and I have now the ICS 4.0.4 on my device. So again, can I use this method to unroot?

  42. chris says:

    Thanks! worked perfectly

    The video is gone :/

    Droid Razr Maxx, ICS.
Root worked just fine. Motorola drivers already installed on my PC.

Secondly, enabling Mobile Hotspot worked perfectly.
The entry number was ’79′ on my device.
    Good luck.

Pretty s##ty to have to do this just to enable a service you already pay for.

My Razr is currently running 4.0.4 and is rooted. A new OTA update just came to my phone and I accidentally said okay. The update didn’t work but I was able to power off my phone and turn it on and it still works as normal. Do I have to unroot if I want to do the update? And if I do, what are the steps necessary to accomplish this? If you have the steps for a Mac, I would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks! You guys rock.
